Taye Diggs will make his grand return to the great white way when he headlines Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The award winning musical is from John Mitchell Cameron, who also starred in the titular role when it debuted off-Broadway as well as the movie adaptation.

Diggs will be the first African-American to portray the character, which goes to show you what color blind casting is alive on Broadway. Taking into account that the character is a German born lad the first choice wouldn’t necessarily be an African-American male. Although it goes deeper than skin color to portray someone who suffers from a botched vaginaplasty who then morphs into a glam rock performer, wobbling on heels with an acid tongue and attitude to match. However former brat pack alum Ally Sheedy also took her turn on the stage as Hedwig, so it appears talent, and possible fame, trumps skin and gender.

People Magazine shows off Diggs new look where he says,

“Hedwig is the role of a lifetime. I’m looking forward to being challenged performance-wise on many levels, as well as being humbled by the musical’s social implications.”
